Happy New Year!

2017 was a busy year for the Scout group. We recruited a group of very enthusiastic new Beaver and Cub leaders to enable us to continue providing fun and exciting programmes for all our members. One of our explorers went on an expedition to Tanzania in the summer to help build a new school in a village and 2 of our young people have been selected to attend the next World Scout Jamboree in 2019 and a further 6 are attending an international event in the same year.

We have also been busy providing great events for the village.

This year we celebrated 25 years of the Dinosaur Derby, which has become one of the biggest events in Denmead. Despite the appalling weather, it was still very well supported by everyone who came dressed in wellies and waterproofs! And we still made over £5000.

In  November we put on another great free firework display, thanks to Wynn Williams, our expert pyromaniac!

For our Remembrance Day Parade this year, we were joined by many other groups in the village with lots more people attending. We continued our tradition of making a poppy field with handmade poppies. Hopefully the new memorial will be in place for the next one.

Christmas was once again a busy time for us. We helped organise the Village Christmas Festival and provided a Santa’s Grotto. The collection raised £ 167.69 which will be donated to Langstone sailability who provide sailing for the disabled.

Santa Round the Village was again a great success, with Santa and his sleigh pulled by the scout reindeer. We raised £306.64 for Portsmouth Headway, our charity for this year. Thank you to our 2 Santas (you know who you are!)

2018 is the Scout Group’s 60th birthday so we will be celebrating in lots of ways. If anyone has photos or memories of the Scouts from the past, we’d love to see them. We will also be working hard on fundraising to support the young people attending international opportunities.

We are always looking for extra help. There are a variety of ways that you could help the group – as a leader (full training is provided), a member of a committee (eg fundraising, executive) or helping out with admin or odd jobs around the HQ. If you can spare any time then please contact us.

We would like to thank everyone who has supported us in various ways this year and look forward to another year of fun and adventure.
